In February 1923, Dr Halliday Sutherland was arraigned in the High Court in London when Dr Marie Stopes sued him for libel. The 2013 discovery of Dr. Sutherland’s papers has forced a re-assessment of the case. Traditionally presented as “Catholics against contraceptives”, Dr. Sutherland was speaking out against Stopes’ plan to implement eugenic population control in Britain.
