In 1911 Dr Sutherland became Medical Director of the St Marylebone Dispensary for the Prevention of Consumption This slide shows a patient at home before and after the room was altered to make it a healthier environment for the patient

Britains birth rate between 1830 and 1930 which began to drop precipitously from 1880 onwards

In Consumption Its Cause and Cure a speech delivered on 4 September 1917 Dr Sutherland described eugenists as race breeders with the souls of cattle breeders

The Mothers Clinic at 61 Marlborough Road Holloway opened on 17 March 1921
The name of the society tenets 9 and 16 of its manifesto the logo and the brand names of the contraceptives dispensed free or at cost reveal the eugenic intent behind the Mothers Clinic It was the first stage in what was intended to be a national movement and was supported by some of the most eminent names of that era including Bertrand Russell HG Wells John Maynard Keynes and George Bernard Shaw
