In memoriam: Vincent Joseph Sutherland

Today marks the 100th birthday of Vincent Joseph Sutherland (30 January 1924 – 19 March 1945), the third son of Muriel and Halliday Sutherland and brother to Jane, John, Peter, Francis and Dick. Vincent was killed aged 21, while serving in 102 (Ceylon) Squadron, R.A.F.

He was buried in the Reichwald Forest, Germany (below).

He is commemorated on memorial altar at Buckfast Abbey in Devon (below).

“The Wings of Men” was among Dr. Sutherland’s papers and may have belonged to Vincent (or to his brother John who also served in the RAF).

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine.
Et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Fidelium animae, per misericordiam Dei,
requiescant in pace.
